In August 2013, the book by Philippe Zawieja and Franck Guarnieri on burnout was published by Armand Colin.
Professional burnout is usually defined as a syndrome that reflects an intense state of physical and mental exhaustion, an attitude of cynicism and dehumanization, and a complete lack of a feeling of personal agency. It affects an average of 5-10% of workers; in certain professions this can rise to 40% of the workforce. In the most serious cases, it can lead to depression, or even an attempt to commit suicide.
Although widespread, the related literature is still based on a limited number of classical theoretical works. This is the reason why this book, written by young researchers working in psychology, sociology and management sciences attempts to explore new theoretical and practical avenues. It looks at a diverse range of professions including social services, care workers, business owners, entrepreneurs working in forestry and order processing staff working for large retailers. Based on numerous field studies, it proposes action plans for the diagnosis, analysis and prevention of burnout.
